What is SARS-CoV-2?

Coronavirus. The unprecedented outbreak that started off 2020, caused the shut down of public areas, and affected millions worldwide.

So, what exactly is this world pandemic?

It’s COVID-19,

... caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome–coronavirus 2, or known as SARS-CoV-2.

This is a novel strain of coronavirus that is more serious and virulent than the diseases caused by other coronaviruses. The airborne disease can be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the human body (lips, nose, eyes) with a lengthy incubation period of 5-14 days, forcing millions to self-quarantine and stay isolated from others to prevent the spread. It is also extremely difficult to self-diagnose early on because the infected can remain symptomless 2-14 days after exposure.

SARS-CoV-2 spherical particles have proteins called spikes protruding from their surface. Once these spikes come in contact with human cells, it undergoes a structural change that allows the viral membrane to fuse with the cell membrane. However, soap or alcohol products can effectively inactivate the virus. By breaking down the outer lipid layer of the viral particles, they lose their capability of binding and entering human cells. As a result, components of the virus are vulnerable to detergents, ethanol, chlorine dioxide and other alcohol products.
